How to get to Arechi Castle

Arechi Castle (Castello di Arechi in Italian) is one of the most important historic places in Salerno. It sits high on Mount Bonadies, more than 300 meters above sea level, and offers incredible views of the Gulf of Salerno. Keep reading to discover how to get to Arechi Castle and why you should visit it.
Why Visit Arechi Castle?
A Bit of History
The castle was built in the 8th century by Arechis II, the Duke of Benevento. Later, in the 11th century, more parts were added, especially during the Norman period.
For many years, it played an important role in protecting the city. But over time, its purpose changed. In the 16th century, it was used as a prison, and by the 18th century, it was completely abandoned.
Luckily, in the 20th century, people started to restore it so that visitors like you and me could enjoy its beauty and history today.
Arechi Castle – What to expect?
Today, Arechi Castle is a great place to walk through old walls and towers, visit small exhibitions, and enjoy events and cultural activities. But honestly, the best part might just be the view—it’s breathtaking!

Why Visit?
If you enjoy natural viewpoints, photography, or simply want to take in some fresh air and history, this castle is the perfect spot. From the top, you can see the city of Salerno, the Gulf, and even parts of the Amalfi Coast on a clear day. It’s a great mix of nature, history, and peace.
How to get to Arechi Castle
Walking from Salerno

You can walk from Salerno’s old town. Depending on where you start, it should take less than 1 hour. The path goes uphill, but it’s not too hard if you take your time.
⚠️ Tip: When using Google Maps, don’t search for the castle directly. Instead, search “Scale per il Castello Arechi.” That will guide you to a small forest trail with signs. If you use the main road, you might end up walking along a dangerous car route.

By Bus
Not in the mood to walk? No problem! Take bus 019 from the “Garibaldi Tribunale” stop. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the castle. Check the times on Google Maps to plan ahead.
Tips for Visiting Arechi Castle
