Montenegro is one of the most underrated European countries. How many times have you heard someone talk about a trip to Montenegro? When Ignacio told me it was his favorite country in Europe, I was a bit skeptical, but his enthusiasm sparked my curiosity. So, we decided to spend 2 months exploring the tourist places in Montenegro. Now, this Balkan country is one of my absolute favorites too. If you’re looking for a destination for your next trip, we’ve prepared a guide with the best places to visit in Montenegro.

1. Kotor – A Must-See Among Montenegro Tourist Sites

Kotor is one of the top places in Montenegro, and it’s easy to see why. The town sits by the sea, surrounded by huge mountains and a beautiful bay. Its old town is really charming, with stone streets, little shops, and a big old church. If you like views, you can walk up the city walls—it’s a bit of a climb, but the view from the top is amazing!

2. Perast, the most beautiful place in Montenegro

One of the best places to visit in Montenegro is Perast – a small village by the Kotor Bay that feels like a postcard. Quiet, peaceful, and full of charm, it’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view. You can take a short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, a tiny island with a lovely church and great photo spots. In my opinion, this is the best place to admire the beauty of the bay. Grab a coffee by the water and just take it all in—it’s unforgettable.

3. Tivat

If you like a more modern and stylish vibe, Tivat is a Montenegro must see. The Porto Montenegro marina is full of huge yachts, fancy shops, and stylish restaurants. It feels very different from the old towns, but it’s just as beautiful in its own way. Whether you’re walking by the water or just people-watching from a café, it’s a fun and fancy place to spend an afternoon.

4. Budva

Out of all the coastal towns we visited, Budva was one of the liveliest and most fun. It has a great mix of beaches, restaurants, and nightlife, plus a charming old town you shouldn’t miss. We chose it as our base and lived there for two months—if you’re into beach days, it’s a great pick with plenty of beautiful spots nearby, like Mogren and Jaz.

But here’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning a trip in 2025: there are major roadworks happening on the main road between Budva, Kotor, and Tivat. We didn’t know this in advance, and getting stuck in traffic became a daily thing. So while Budva is definitely worth a visit, I’d suggest staying just 1–2 nights. If you’re planning to visit Montenegro tourist sites like Kotor, Perast, Tivat, or Herceg Novi, it’s better to stay closer to those towns to save time and avoid the road chaos.

5. Sveti Stefan: The Most Beautiful Island to Visit in Montenegro

Just a short drive from Budva, Sveti Stefan is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Montenegro. This tiny island, home to a luxury hotel, looks like something out of a postcard—surrounded by clear blue water and soft sandy beaches. You can’t go onto the island unless you’re staying at the hotel, but the views from the nearby beach are stunning. It’s a great spot to relax, take photos, or just enjoy the beauty of the coast.

6. St. Sava Church

St. Sava Church is one of the top places in Montenegro to enjoy the view of Sveti Stefan. This small hilltop chapel above the village offers an incredible panorama of the island and the coastline. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot—perfect for photos or just taking a break while soaking in the scenery.

7. Stari grad Bar

Stari Bar is a Montenegro must see if you enjoy history and hidden gems. This ancient ruined town feels like stepping into another time, with stone streets, old castle walls, and a peaceful vibe all around. There isn’t much to explore beyond the ruins, but we’re really glad we went—skipping it would’ve been a big mistake.

And the best part? We had the most amazing meal of our entire trip right here. Sadly, we don’t remember the name of the restaurant… but with only one small street full of places to eat, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to be invited in by the same friendly waiters. Totally unforgettable experience!

8. The Kotor Serpentine: Montenegro’s Most Scenic Road

The Kotor Serpentine isn’t just a road—it’s one of the best places to visit in Montenegro if you’re after unforgettable views. This winding mountain drive takes you high above the Bay of Kotor, with incredible spots to stop and take photos along the way. It’s not the easiest road to drive, but the views of the fjord and the Adriatic coast make it totally worth it. Honestly, it’s one of the most impressive routes we’ve ever taken.

9. Lovcen National Park, Must-See in Montenegro if you like scenic views

Lovćen National Park is one of the top places in Montenegro if you’re looking for epic views and mountain landscapes. On our last trip, we made a new discovery here that we didn’t expect. We were trying to reach the park’s most famous viewpoint, but for some reason, Google Maps took us onto a road that our rented Volkswagen Touaran just couldn’t handle—it was way too rough to drive.

Luckily, we found Monte1350bar, a hidden gem with one of the most amazing views we’ve seen in Montenegro. This little bar became one of our favorite new finds of the whole trip. Just one heads-up: there were a lot of mosquitoes (or similar bugs), so don’t forget your repellent! Even with the bugs, the view is totally worth it—perfect as a stop before or after visiting Kotor or driving the Kotor Serpentine road.

10. Herceg Novi

One of those Montenegro tourist sites we always come back to is Herceg Novi, especially when we’re on our way to Dubrovnik. It’s a lovely coastal town with a calm, local vibe—perfect for a relaxing stop before crossing the border. You can take a walk through the charming Old Town, climb the Kanli Kula fortress for a great view, or stroll along the seaside promenade filled with cafés and small beaches.

Even if you only spend a few hours here, it’s a spot worth seeing. We’ve made it a little tradition to stop here each time we head to Croatia from Montenegro—and it never disappoints.

11. Piva Canyon

Piva Canyon, located in northern Montenegro, is a bit far from Budva and the other spots mentioned in this article, but it’s absolutely worth the trip. This stunning canyon features a turquoise lake surrounded by majestic mountains—a truly breathtaking sight!

12. Ostrog Monastery: The Most Spectacular Church to Visit in Montenegro

Ostrog Monastery is definitely one of the best places to visit in Montenegro. It’s built right into the side of a mountain, and its location alone makes it one of the most unforgettable spots in the country. The views from up there are incredible, and there’s a quiet, peaceful vibe that makes the whole experience feel really special.

Keep in mind, you’ll need to walk a bit uphill from the parking lot, so wear comfy shoes. But don’t worry—it’s absolutely worth it.

13. Cijevna Waterfalls: A Hidden Gem Near Podgorica

The Cijevna Waterfalls are located on the Cijevna River near Podgorica. While they may not be as large as Niagara Falls, they are absolutely beautiful. Plus, it’s one of the few must-see places near Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica.

14. The Largest Lake in the Balkans: Lake Skadar

Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans and an important wildlife haven. The lake spans across the border, with one part located in Montenegro and the other in Albania.

You might have noticed that we didn’t mention Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, on our list of places to visit. Why? Well, it’s often overlooked by tourists. The city lacks the historical and architectural charm found in other parts of Montenegro, like Kotor or Budva. We visited Podgorica once, but honestly, there wasn’t much to see. In our opinion, Montenegro’s capital isn’t worth a visit, especially when there are so many other beautiful places to explore in the country.

Is Montenegro Worth Visiting?

Traveling to Montenegro is a fantastic idea—just don’t wait too long, because it’s getting more popular every day! This small country has it all: historic towns, stunning beaches, beautiful mountains, and warm, welcoming people. It’s also a budget-friendly destination with great weather most of the year.

Another big plus? Montenegro isn’t part of the Schengen Area, which makes it a smart option for travelers from Latin America or other regions looking to extend their time in Europe.
